Overview for Director of Patient Safety

This program is a program that promotes a culture of safety and the elimination of avoidable harm. With others in the Quality Management department, provides ongoing support to quality of care provided to our patients and families, including, but not limited to: managing components of quality and patient safety projects, including patient safety, quality improvement, accreditation and licensing, service excellence, medical staff services, peer review, risk management, infection control and Core Measures. Provides input and recommendations to the VP of Quality for quality and patient safety projects and initiatives. Exercises discretion, judgment, and decision-making in the interpretation of hospital policies, procedures, protocols and practices as they relate to Quality and Patient Safety initiatives and in accordance with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational performance improvement. Develops and conducts audits and uses data to drive sustained improvement in safety and quality. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and is able to develop reports and assist with PowerPoint presentations. Ensures policies and procedures related to quality are current and maintained. Assist with the survey at the direction of the VP of Quality.

Knowledge of patient safety science principles, theory, methods, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Knowledge of and experience with patient safety analysis techniques (methods). Proven team building skills in dealing with intra-professional clinical and operations teams including medical staff in diverse settings.

Demonstrated ability to deliver educational and informational presentations on clinical and/or patient safety topics.

Knowledge of rapid cycle improvement theory

Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS) required;
If not already CPPS, must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
Other licenses/certifications required by State.

Clinical background required

Bachelors Degree in healthcare or business related field; BSN preferred. Master’s in public health or health-related preferred.
